Walnut Creek Recreation
Where to start? Walnut Creek has grown from a sleepy town around 20 years ago, when I first moved to the East Bay, to a City in its own right. I rarely go to San Francisco any more as Walnut Creek and the surrounding area services all of my needs.
Lets take cultural activities for a start. Apart from the renowned Lesher Center, a multi-venue theater of the highest quality, Walnut Creek has a number of other theater companies, plus there are additional ones a stone's throw away at Concord, Pleasant Hill, Lafayette and Danville.
And The Lesher Center is much more than a theater. They regularly have interesting exhibitions there and they cover all aspects of the preforming arts.
There are movie theaters galore in and around Walnut Creek, including the recently built multi-screen movie theater in downtown Walnut Creek.
For those who like to dine out, there are eating establishments to suit all pockets. Fast food places abound and most of the national chains are well represented but in addition, Walnut Creek's independent restaurateurs have achieved general recognition and restaurants such as Va De Vi and Prima Trattoria are in the San Francisco Michelin Guide. There are restaurants in Walnut Creek to suit all tastes as well as all pockets. Don't miss the Walnut Creek Yacht Club if you like sea food, and for some real American food in very pleasant surroundings, visit Bradley Ogden's excellent Lark Creek Cafe on Locust Street.
For even more variety, drive 10 minutes west to Lafayette where you will find an equal variety of restaurants including even more that are recommended in the Michelin Guide.
Restaurants come and go, and theaters change their programs on a regular basis. If you want to know what is happening in the area, visit any of our excellent local bookstores and get a copy of Diablo Magazine (or visit their web site). Diablo keeps you right up to date with cutural activities, the restaurant scene, shopping and more.
And speaking of shopping, this is another are where Walnut Creek just gets better. Not just with high end stores like Tiffany and Nordstrum, and chains such as Macy's and Crate and Barrell, but with an amazing range of boutiques, home decor shops and much more. There is not much that you won't find in Walnut Creek.
