Walnut Creek CA is the second largest city in Contra Costa County after Concord and although Concord has by far the more affordable housing, there are few that would not prefer Walnut Creek as a place to live, work and play.
Situated at the junction of Highways 680 and 24, approximately mid-way down the San Ramon Valley, Walnut Creek CA has seen substantial growth in recent years and the already attractive downtown is being gradually redeveloped to the extent that it is beginning to feel like a smaller version of San Francisco. There are lots of individual stores and boutiques in Walnut Creek as well as major chains such as Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma, Restoration Hardware and Barnes and Noble. Nordstroms also chose to open in Walnut Creek many years ago, foreshadowing the recent expansion here and two of the most recent significant additions are Tiffany's and an Apple store, which say much about the demographics of the area. Those who like to eat out will not be disappointed either. Again, there are many names that most people would recognize such as PF Chang's China Bistro, Ruth's Chris Steak House and Il Fornaio, but there is also an outstanding choice of individual restaurants.
Walnut Creek Real Estate options abound as the city is surrounded by residential areas. This is a very popular place to live, both for people who work close by and for those who commute to San Francisco or Oakland, a commute made realtively easy by the existence of the Walnut Creek BART station. San Jose is also in easy reach, just a 30-45 minute commute down 680, depending on the time of day.
Home styles are many and varied in Walnut Creek and range in age from the nineteen twenties and earlier, right up to the present day. The only new construction you will find though (other than a few up-scale condominium developments) are custom homes, and you can pay well over $2 million dollars for some of these.
